But God. These are two of my favorite words in the Bible. Most certainly, they represent a theme that inspires hope, especially when we find ourselves in circumstances that seem overwhelming and out of control.
We were dead in our sins, BUT GOD poured His grace on us and made a restored relationship with Him possible (Ephesians 2:1-9).
Joseph’s brothers meant evil against him, BUT GOD meant it for good (Genesis 50:20).
We run out of steam and our hope begins to dim, BUT GOD makes our hearts strong (Psalm 73:26).
Things seem utterly impossible, BUT WITH GOD nothing is too difficult (Matthew 19:26).
I have been waiting for God to intervene in some pretty desperate circumstances with a “BUT GOD” moment. I know He can. I don’t doubt that He loves me and cares for me. But He is choosing to leave the mountains despite my mustard seed faith.
And yet I cling to the hope that He is working to bring about good! I am learning it is not just the final outcome that I must trust, but also the process which God chooses to use. I must trust that His timing, not mine, is best and that His “BUT GOD” moment will arrive not a moment too late.
And while I feel the disappointment that He hasn’t yet brought the answers I long for, I fully embrace the goodness of God and hold tightly to what I know to be true about Him. I simply cannot stop having faith because that is what is keeping me going. It’s all I have to cling to. It fills me with hope.
When my faith grows weary, hope steps up and reminds me to never give up! Hope declares that nothing is too difficult for God. It reminds me to focus on His character and to believe that He is faithful and in control. Hope encourages me to cling tightly to the goodness of God and to hold on for dear life!
I believe God is working and that one day, all will be restored. And while I wait, I commit to seeking Him. I choose to breathe in His grace, forgiveness, and love. I practice exhaling frustration, bitterness, and fear. I breathe in God’s compassion and peace while exhaling irritability and demanding my own way.
Are you waiting for a ‘But God’ moment in your life? Are you disappointed in the current narrative of your story or anxious for God to hurry up and bring an abundance of good? Link arms with me and believe in the goodness of God even when circumstances seem overwhelmingly bad. Believe that He will work all things according to His purposes at just the right time–and not a moment too late.
Romans 8:28 “In all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
