Many of David’s Psalms were written while experiencing troubles. I am not sure in which trauma-packed set of circumstances Psalm 27 was written, but it reflects a heart that is anchored in hope nonetheless.
David didn’t have a fair-weather faith that crumbled when difficulties surrounded him, but a solid faith that was courageous in times of troubles. David knew he could count on seeing God’s goodness even when his surroundings were filled with darkness and despair. David chose to worship his faithful, good God not because his life was free of troubles, but even if his troubles remained.
David kept his eyes on God. He wanted to live his life God’s way. Instead of demanding God to take away his troubles, he asked God to be his steady path through them. He remembered God’s faithfulness in the past which gave him hope as he waited for God’s continued faithfulness in the future. Listen to his words of hope:
“Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” Psalm 27: 13 – 14 (NLT)
Are you in a season filled with troubles? Are you feeling overwhelmed and discouraged? Do not despair! Our God who lifted up David’s head will lift yours too! He has been faithful before and He will be faithful again! Be expectant! Take courage!
