Sometimes circumstances in our lives seem all sunshine and calm. We move around happily without a care in the world. But sometimes, circumstances can take a turn and difficulties can pour in with great gusto. We feel tossed and turned, overwhelmed and afraid. It is during such stormy circumstances, though, that our faith is tested and we come to truly understand not only who we are, but Who God is.
After teaching all day to a great crowd, Jesus told those closest to Him to get into the boat in order to cross to the other side. Other boats tagged along as well. (Mark 4). I don’t think it was mere happenstance who was about to encounter a big storm. I believe God had a plan.
I wonder why we are surprised when stormy circumstances hit. Do we think that we should somehow be immune to trials? God tells us that when, not if, we pass through rough waters He is with us and He promises that we will not be overwhelmed. (Isaiah 43). When storms hit, as assuredly they do, we shouldn’t focus on the giant waves, or demand to know why God is allowing the storm, but our focus should be on God and His plan for us in the storm.
In their fear, the men in the boat questioned God’s care for them. I think that when we are overwhelmed, it is easy to let doubt spring up and take control. We need to remind ourselves of how God considers us. We are redeemed and precious. We are loved, honored, and created for His glory. We must remember Who God is. He not only can calm a storm, but He can make a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters (Isaiah 43). He is a God of miracles.
Jesus knew these men needed their faith strengthened and he used a storm to accomplish it. God wants our faith to be firmly established. When we don’t understand the circumstances that surround us, we should ask for His wisdom (James 1). We must refuse to give in to our fears and commit to trust Him.
God is constantly up to something new. We must commit to look for it. We must confidently trust Him to make a way where the roadblocks seem insurmountable. He does the unexpected. He makes the impossible possible. Do we trust Him? Do we believe His promises? Or do we let circumstances determine our theology?
Are you experiencing sunny and calm days? God is good. He is faithful. He is in control. Are your days filled with storm clouds and heavy rains? God is good. He is faithful. He is in control. I believe God uses all of our circumstances to build our trust and make our faith flourish. And therefore, I choose to commit my ways to Him, to trust HIm, and not panic. I believe all of my steps are established by Him and that He is my Advocate and Defender. He is by my side, holding my hand, assuring me that I am safe in Him. (Psalm 37).
