Trusting in the Middle

There are some stories in the Bible that beckon me to read them over and over again. The story of The Three in the Fiery Furnace is one of these stories. I encourage you to read the entire story in Daniel 3 as it describes faith-filled men and a faithful God from beginning to end. However, this morning I was fixed upon the middle of this story.

These Three had tremendous faith in God’s ability. They had no doubt that He could save them from an angry king and the threat of the fire. However, their faith wasn’t based on the hope that God would save them, but upon their belief that God was trustworthy even if He didn’t.

They could have caved in to pressure from an irate king, or cowered in fear while they waited for the furnace to heat up seven times hotter. They could have compromised their faith while the soldiers bound them and walked them toward the furnace. But they didn’t. They knew that no matter how their current predicament might end, God was still worthy of their trust, their praise, and their love.

Are you in the middle of an even-if season? Are you trusting God for deliverance yet at the same time declaring He is trustworthy no matter how your circumstances play out?

We know how the story ends for these three, and it’s pretty amazing! It gives me hope that God can work miracles for me too. Thus, I still hope. I still pray. But even if He doesn’t rescue me, I trust that He is still a good and loving, capable and strong God who is worthy! This is the hope that anchors my soul.
